MEETING WITH ORGANIZATIONS AGAINST DISINFORMATION FROM SUB-SAHARAN AFRICAN COUNTRIES

On September 1, MEP Javier Zarzalejos met with a delegation of seven experts against disinformation from South Africa, Senegal, Ghana, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Nigeria. This meeting took place within the framework of the Dialogue Program on Multinational Development Policies of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS).

The KAS Sub-Saharan Africa Media Program has been collaborating with fact-checking organization Africa Check for four years. The goal of the study and dialogue program is that the delegates present their work and the situation in their countries. It is also an opportunity to meet with important European partners and discuss possible collaborations.

During the meeting with the MEP, the issue of access to information on the African continent was addressed. Experts point out that pressure is necessary, exerted through tangible regulations, so that governments guarantee the population full access to information and social networks take responsibility for the illegal content (often sexist or racist) that is published in them in African countries.
