DIÁLOGOS FAES WHERE IS THE UNITED KINGDOM GOING?

MEP Javier Zarzalejos participated on November 18 together with the journalist and writer, Tom Burns, in a new FAES Dialogues entitled, Where is the United Kingdom going?, moderated by the political analyst, José Ruiz Vicioso.

The country, which has traditionally been characterized by political stability, has undergone substantial changes in a short period of time that have reconfigured its position in the world. Javier Zarzalejos considered that “it continues to be a newly created project”, and believes that the United Kingdom “must define a strategy in its future relationship with Europe in line with free trade and be part of the internal market”, because “it does not make sense to return to being an economic island”, he pointed out.

Regarding the recent movements within the British Conservative Party, both speakers agreed on the political significance of Boris Johnson. “Johnson is Churchillian and now he is going to do a lot of international politics in support of Ukraine,” said Tom Burns, to which Javier Zarzalejos stressed that he is “a man who has revived the electoral luck of the conservatives with a brilliant speech” but in his opinion, “it will be a page that the conservative party will close”, because “he is not the person who meets the best conditions to face the future”.

“The Conservative Party has shown enormous resilience” and “it is an essential party,” said Zarzalejos in light of the changes that the country has experienced recently, “I would not consider it finished.” According to Burns, the party will exhaust the legislature, but the latest “blunders” could take their toll on Parliament tomorrow.
