MEETING WITH A DELEGATION FROM THE BUNDESTAG TO ANALYZE THE SITUATION OF THE RULE OF LAW IN THE EU
On March 8, a delegation of the Subcommittee on European Law of the German Bundestag met with MEPs from various political groups to exchange views on the situation of the rule of law in the EU.
During the meeting, the members of the German delegation showed interest in the current state of the rule of law in the EU, the recent debates surrounding the rule of law, as well as the annual cycle of rule of law monitoring by the European Commission.
In addition, they showed specific interest in the monitoring work of the European Parliament’s Monitoring Group assessing threats to democracy in the EU.
MEPs Javier Zarzalejos (EPP) and Sergey Lagodinsky (Greens) participated in the meeting as members of the Monitoring Group. Also participating in the meeting was MEP Petri Sarvamaa, who was rapporteur for the proposal for a regulation creating the cross-compliance mechanism on European funds and had the opportunity to explain in detail the consequences of its implementation.
The Popular MEP Javier Zarzalejos explained the status of the procedures relating to Article 7 of the TEU and stressed “the importance that the annual reports of the European Commission have been consolidated since they effectively serve the objective of strengthening democracy and the rule of law in the EU”.
