BREAKFAST MEETING WITH COMMISSIONER JOHANSSON

During the last plenary session in Strasbourg, MEP Zarzalejos participated in a meeting with Ylva Johansson, European Commissioner for Home Affairs, promoter of the legislative proposal to combat child sexual abuse.

The meeting was attended by several MEPs, all of them involved in some way in the negotiation process that is taking place in the Parliament and where the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament (LIBE) is taking the lead, although the Committees on Culture, Women, Budgets and Internal Market are also participating in giving their opinion.

During the meeting, the Commissioner reiterated the importance of approving the legislation to combat child sexual abuse before the end of the current legislature since, as of August 2024, companies operating on the Internet will have no legal basis to prevent and detect the presence of child abuse content in their services.

Both the European Parliament and the European Council are currently working on this legally challenging proposal within the EU’s demanding data protection framework. “With due safeguards and judicial control, we must work and make progress in detecting and removing this content, but we must also focus on prevention and on providing young people with the necessary tools. In short, this is an urgent response that we have to give from the institutions” concluded the MEP.
