“THE PPE WILL NOT FOLLOW THE SOCIALISTS IN THEIR DIRECTION TOWARDS DEMOCRATIC DEGRADATION; WE WILL CONTINUE TO FIGHT FOR THE EUROPE OF LAW AND JUSTICE”
The PP MEP Javier Zarzalejos assured Pedro Sánchez on December 13 that the European People’s Party, Europe’s leading political force, “will not follow the Socialists in their direction towards institutional and political degradation; we will continue to fight for the Europe of law, law and institutions”.
He did so in the European Parliament, where Sánchez appeared in a debate on the Spanish presidency of the Council that is about to end.
“Many heads of government and heads of state pass through this tribune, but you are really a unique case, as you are the only prime minister to occupy this tribune who has left his government in the hands of a fugitive from justice for some of the most serious crimes that a politician can commit,” Zarzalejos told him, who assured that this “is unprecedented.”
Zarzalejos defended the judicial system and the judges against the attacks of the pro-independence supporters: “The rule of law is judicial independence and it is the judges, seriously insulted yesterday in Congress by their partners, it is the judges of all tendencies, who have denounced what their government pacts mean”.
“While Europe strengthens the rule of law, your message is that enforcing the law is bad for coexistence”
“While Europe strives to strengthen the rule of law, you come here with the message that applying the law is bad for coexistence. The rule of law means submitting power to institutions, not institutions submitted to power,” he reminded Sánchez.
In addition, Zarzalejos criticized the results of the European semester presided by Sánchez: “If we talk about the Middle East, Israel has withdrawn its ambassador and you are congratulated by Hámas; if we talk about energy, it turns out that Spain increases its gas purchases from Putin; and if we talk about immigration we know how they solve the immigration crises in the Canary Islands, centrifuging without control the immigrants in the Peninsula”.
The PP MEP reproached Sánchez “to be sitting between the European anomaly and the national shame, because the truth is that seditious embezzlers charged with acts of terrorism, yes acts of terrorism, are going to go unpunished”.
