MEETING WITH THE PRESIDENT OF THE CANARY ISLANDS, FERNANDO CLAVIJO
Javier Zarzalejos met on Wednesday 20 November with the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, in his capacity as Chairman of the LIBE Committee of the European Parliament, to address the serious migration crisis affecting the Canary Islands. During the meeting, the current situation and possible solutions to face this challenge from the European level were discussed, with special emphasis on cooperation between the European institutions and the Canary Islands authorities, claiming the Canary Islands’ status as a European border.
Furthermore, the implementation of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum was analysed, highlighting the need to guarantee a more equitable distribution of resources and efforts in the management of migration. The two leaders agreed on the importance of a joint and coordinated response among Member States to effectively address this serious migration crisis.
