CUBAN HUMAN RIGHTS OBSERVATORY

On Monday, May 12, MEP Javier Zarzalejos met in Brussels with Elena Larrinaga and Yaxys Cires, representatives of the Cuban Human Rights Observatory (OCDH), to discuss the state of fundamental rights in Cuba. During the meeting, the current situation on the island was analyzed, with particular focus on the recent imprisonment of opposition leader José Daniel Ferrer, head of the Patriotic Union of Cuba.

Cires and Larrinaga expressed their concern to the MEP over the ongoing erosion of freedoms in Cuba and emphasized the need for the European Union to take a firmer stance in defense of human rights on the island. They also shared updated information on the challenges faced by civil society and the importance of maintaining international attention on the repression endured by activists. Additionally, the difficult economic situation in Cuba was discussed.

Javier Zarzalejos reaffirmed his commitment to the cause of freedom in Cuba and pledged to continue working from the European Parliament to raise awareness of these cases, support human rights defenders, and advocate for strong action in defense of democratic values.
