ZARZALEJOS ADDRESSES THE EUROPEAN MIGRATION AGENDA WITH PORTUGAL’S MINISTER of the Presidency

As Chair of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE)—the committee responsible for immigration matters in the European Parliament—Javier Zarzalejos held a working meeting with Portugal’s Minister of the Presidency, who is responsible for these competences within the Portuguese government, as part of the minister’s official visit to Brussels.

The meeting enabled a fruitful exchange of views on the main challenges facing the European migration agenda and took place during the Portuguese minister’s stay in the EU capital, where, among other activities, he participated in a working breakfast organized by Member of the European Parliament Paulo Cunha focusing on legal pathways for migration.

During the meeting, both discussed the European Union’s migration package and, in particular, the process for implementing the Migration and Asylum Pact, which is scheduled to come into force in June 2026. They also exchanged views on various legislative instruments currently under negotiation, such as the returns regulation, highlighting the importance of effective and coordinated implementation of the new European rules.
