THE PP DEMANDS RECOGNITION OF THE IRANIAN REGIME AS A GLOBAL THREAT AND ITS REVOLUTIONARY GUARD AS A TERRORIST ORGANISATION

The Popular Party demanded on 24 April in the plenary session of the European Parliament that the Iranian regime be recognised as a threat to democracy and its revolutionary guard as a terrorist organisation.

The resolution was adopted in a debate with the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell in which the PP MEPs Javier Zarzalejos and Antonio López-Istúriz took part.

Zarzalejos: “It is likely that Iran already possesses nuclear capability”.

Iran’s direct attack on Israel has raised the level of aggression to an unprecedented and much more dangerous level,” said Javier Zarzalejos MEP. But the escalation is due to the actions of Iran’s proxies, from Hamas to Hizbullah to the Houthi militias.

He said that “sanctions alone are not a policy, but appeals for calm on their own are not a policy either.

“It is likely that Iran already possesses a nuclear capability and so-called weaponisation is pending. “The resolution is very explicit about the consequences of Iran’s non-compliance with its obligations in this regard”.

Finally, Zarzalejos also pointed out the importance of supporting “the Iranian people, the struggle of women and the opposition. “They all have the right to have their struggle recognised by the European Union and their aspirations for a free and peaceful Iran supported”.

Mr López-Istúriz, who negotiated the resolution on behalf of the EPP Group, said that “at last, it seems that people are beginning to understand that democracy is a threat to the regime in Tehran, and that the ayatollahs will do everything they can to undermine any efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East and destabilise democracies around the world”.
