MEETING WITH THE COMMISSIONER FOR HOME AFFAIRS AND IMMIGRATION, MAGNUR BRUNNER
On 3 December, a delegation of the Basque PP, headed by Javier Zarzalejos and the president of the Basque PP, Javier de Andrés, held a meeting with the European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Immigration, Magnus Brunner, at the European Commission.
At the meeting, the Basque PP delegation presented the particularities of the Basque case in relation to immigration, especially the situation of unaccompanied minors in Bizkaia.
Zarzalejos and De Andrés highlighted the need for a ‘balanced and fair’ distribution of minors among the autonomous communities, as well as the lack of conditions for receiving social aid in the Basque Country. This situation has led to the fact that, despite having the lowest unemployment rate among the local population, the Basque Country has the highest unemployment rate among immigrants.
The Basque leaders asked Commissioner Brunner for a solution to this problem from a European perspective, denouncing the Spanish government’s neglect of its duties.
Finally, the Basque PP delegation addressed the situation in the Basque Country after the end of ETA, stressing the need to clarify the unsolved terrorist attacks and to avoid the still recurrent tributes to terrorists.
