MEETING OF THE LIBE CHAIR WITH THE UNHCR REPRESENTATIVE TO THE EU

On March 26, LIBE Committee Chair Javier Zarzalejos met with Jean-Nicolas Beuze, Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to the European Union, to discuss the main challenges related to the implementation of the new Pact on Migration and Asylum.

The meeting emphasised the need for full and consistent implementation of the Pact by all Member States, with particular focus on the role of the European Parliament as a guarantor of fundamental rights and legislative coherence.

Zarzalejos and Beuze exchanged views on the key aspects of the new returns proposal, published by the Commission on March 11, and the development of partnerships with third countries in the context of the external dimension of the Pact. They also discussed the role of UNHCR in the upcoming 2026–2027 EU Resettlement and Humanitarian Admission Plan.

The LIBE Chair reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to a migration management approach based on legality, solidarity, and shared responsibility.
