JOINT LIBE–JURI MEETING ON THE JUSTICE PROGRAMME 2028–2034

On 19 January, the LIBE and JURI parliamentary committees held a joint meeting in Strasbourg at which the European Commission presented the new European Union Justice Programme for the 2028–2034 period.

The session was co-chaired by Javier Zarzalejos, Chair of the LIBE Committee, and Ilhan Kyuchyuk, Chair of the JURI Committee. The European Commission was represented by Commissioner Michael McGrath, responsible for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection.

The Commissioner presented the Justice Programme for the 2028–2034 period, highlighting the need to ensure adequate and stable funding for justice as a pillar of the European area of freedom, security and justice. He stressed that the future programme will focus on strengthening the digitalisation and interoperability of judicial systems, promoting cross-border judicial cooperation, enhancing the training of justice professionals, and improving effective access to justice for citizens, businesses and victims, in full respect of the rule of law.

Following the Commissioner’s intervention, rapporteurs from the different political groups of both parliamentary committees took the floor, concluding with a question-and-answer session.
