CLOSING SESSION OF THE 2026 FAES CAMPUS

Javier Zarzalejos, Member of the European Parliament and Director of the FAES Foundation, took part in the closing session of the FAES Campus alongside the President of the Partido Popular, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, and former Prime Minister of Spain and President of the FAES Foundation, José María Aznar.

Zarzalejos called for a stronger political presence for both Spain and Europe in Latin America. He also advocated “a Europe open to Latin America and a Latin America open to Europe, with Spain present on both sides of this equation”, and called for a strategy that is “not only commercial, but also political, focused on visibility and closer ties between peoples and societies”.

He also criticised the Government’s foreign policy, which he described as a “systemic failure”, and called for the restoration of a foreign policy guided by Spain’s interests and by its ability to act as a bridge between Europe and Latin America. In this context, he also defended free trade, a “committed, reasonable and realistic Atlanticism”, and the need to undertake “an enormous reconstruction effort” to shape Spain’s future.
