On January 21, the PP spokeswoman in the European Parliament, Dolors Montserrat, and the MEP Javier Zarzalejos met with the new Commissioner for Justice, Democracy and the Rule of Law, Michael McGrath, to express their concern about the policies of the Spanish government, which they consider threaten judicial independence and the rule of law in Spain.<\/p>\n
Zarzalejos and Montserrat pointed to issues such as the amnesty law, the reform of the Penal Code that reduces penalties for sedition and corruption offenses, and the elimination of the popular accusation. In addition, they criticized what they consider a \u201cpartisan occupation\u201d of key institutions such as RTVE, the CIS and the State Attorney General’s Office, and the government’s intervention in private companies, such as the recent change of presidency at Telef\u00f3nica.<\/p>\n
