On 19 November, Javier Zarzalejos, in his capacity as Chair of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE), took part in a round table held to mark the launch of the Liaison Office of the Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) in Brussels. He joined a panel with Commissioner Michael McGrath, responsible for Democracy, Justice and the Rule of Law; the FRA Director, Sirpa Rautio; and the co-founder of the Our Rule of Law Foundation, Anna Walczak.<\/p>\n
In his remarks, Zarzalejos underlined the essential role of the European Parliament as a driving force for democratic resilience, especially in a context where the rule of law is coming under increasing internal and external pressure. He highlighted the value of parliamentary instruments such as the Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group (DRFMG) and the Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield, designed to strengthen democratic oversight, anticipate risks, and ensure that European principles are not weakened. He also stressed the need for legislative leadership in areas such as judicial independence, media freedom, and the fight against disinformation and foreign interference.<\/p>\n
Zarzalejos further emphasised the importance of close cooperation between the European Parliament, the Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA), and civil society to strengthen and protect fundamental rights across the European Union. He also underlined that enhancing citizen participation, supporting those who defend the rule of law, and promoting a strong democratic culture are indispensable conditions for maintaining citizens\u2019 trust in institutions.
