SAKHAROV PRIZE AWARDED TO JINA MAHSA AMINI AND THE ‘WOMEN, LIFE, FREEDOM’ MOVEMENT

EP Plenary session.- Award of the Sakharov Prize 2023

On Tuesday, 12 December, the European Parliament awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to Iranian national Jina Mahsa Amini and the ‘Women, Life, Freedom’ movement, in recognition of her courage in speaking out for a better, free and democratic Iran.

Jina Mahsa Amini was killed on September 12, 2022 by Iran’s morality police after being arrested for “improper” wearing of the hijab.

In addition, the Iranian authorities banned her family from leaving the country to go to the European Parliament in Strasbourg to receive the prize.

This year’s Sakharov Prize serves as a tribute to all the brave and defiant women, men and young people of Iran who continue to fight for equality, dignity and freedom in Iran, despite increasing pressure from the regime.
