THE PP GETS THE RUSSIAN INTERFERENCE RESOLUTION TO MENTION PUIGDEMONT AND GENERALITAT WITH THE VOTE AGAINST THE PSOE

The European Parliament approved last February 8 a resolution calling for an investigation in Spain into the connections of Members of the European Parliament allegedly associated with the Kremlin and Russia’s attempts at destabilization and interference in the European Union.

Specifically, it expressed “deep concern about the massive disinformation campaigns that Russia has carried out in Catalonia, as well as the alleged contacts and meetings between the agents responsible for Russian interference and the independence movement” and asked that “the competent judicial authorities investigate”, in reference to the links of the fugitive Carles Puigdemont and his entourage and the Generalitat with Putin’s agents.

The Popular Party presented amendments for the resolution to expressly mention Carles Puigdemont and the Generalitat of Catalonia, and all were approved with the PSOE voting against, despite the fact that these contacts between the fugitive and Putin have already been accredited by the European Parliament.

MEP Javier Zarzalejos criticized that “while the European Parliament demands to investigate the interferences, Sanchez does his best to let them go unpunished.”

For Zarzalejos, the resolution “expresses its deep concern about the alleged relations between Catalan secessionists,” “supports the ongoing investigations” and also “deplores all attacks against judges investigating the interference activities.”

Support for the judges and rejection of the attacks they are suffering

Thus, he was very satisfied with the resolution and the incorporation of the amendments, as it is very clear and forceful in its support for the ongoing investigations into Puigdemont’s links with Putin’s entourage and also, in its support for the judges investigating Russian interference and deplores the attacks on the judges investigating them.

“While in Europe we are increasingly concerned about the threat posed by Russian interference, Sánchez is doing his best to ensure that they go unpunished in Spain thanks to his Amnesty Law.”

“Socialist MEPs show us once again that they prefer to defend the interests of the fugitive than to defend the interests of Spaniards and Europeans,” said EPP group vice-president Dolors Montserrat at the end of the vote. “Such is the pro-independence roadmap of Sánchez, also in Europe”.

The PP spokeswoman assured that it was “an important day in the European Parliament, because we send a great message of democratic strength: Russian interference in Europe and also in the pro-independence process must be investigated to the end”.
