ZARZALEJOS PARTICIPATES IN A FRONTEX EVENT

On March 25, Javier Zarzalejos, Member of the European Parliament from the Partido Popular and Chair of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE), participated in Brussels in the event “Frontex in Brussels: Futureproofing the Role of European Integrated Border Management Intelligence”, alongside the Executive Director of Frontex, Hans Leijtens.
During his speech, Zarzalejos stressed that European migration policy must be based on a balance between control and legality, with more secure external borders and immigration linked to labor market needs. In this regard, he highlighted the progress achieved with the Pact on Migration and Asylum, while warning that its effectiveness depends on completing the system with a credible returns policy.
The Chair of LIBE insisted that having reliable and shared information is an essential condition for making responsible political decisions. He argued that migration management cannot be based on perceptions, but rather on solid data that allows risks to be anticipated, vulnerabilities to be identified, and coordinated responses to challenges at the external borders.
He also warned about the use of migration as a tool of pressure in the current geopolitical context, reinforcing the need for a more anticipatory approach. In this framework, he emphasized the role of Frontex in producing joint analyses and supporting Member States, and underlined the importance of providing the agency with the necessary resources to ensure an effective and sustainable European border management system.
