THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT LINKS THE AMNESTY TO SÁNCHEZ’S GOVERNMENT PACT, DESPITE THE PSOE’S MANEUVERS TO AVOID IT

The Plenary of the European Parliament linked last February 28th the amnesty to Pedro Sánchez’s government pact, in the report on the situation of the rule of law in the EU in 2023, approved in the last plenary session. It was also approved to request an independent evaluation of the amnesty and to ask the Socialist Government for total transparency before the European institutions.

All this despite the PSOE’s attempt to avoid it, as they tried to eliminate in the vote the express reference to the amnesty made in the report, but they lost.

After the failure, the Spanish socialists supported the final text following their group, but “they made it clear with their maneuvers that they renounce to defend the rule of law in the EU to save the amnesty of their boss Sánchez”, denounced the vice-president of the European People’s Party Group, Dolors Montserrat.

The spokeswoman warned the Socialists that the PP will continue to lead in Europe the fight against the amnesty law and defend judicial independence and equality of all Spaniards, as it has done once again in this report on the rule of law.

One more proof of the relevance given by the European Parliament to what is happening in Spain

The MEP Javier Zarzalejos, who promoted the amendments on the amnesty, assured that the approved report demonstrates the relevance that the European Parliament gives to the problems that affect the Rule of Law in Spain and its deterioration due to the action of the Government”.

Zarzalejos addressed the Socialists because of the tension he perceived in the debate, and wanted to clarify that “the corruption scandal that has broken out in Spain and that affects the Socialist Government has serious European implications and that they will be coming out”.

Furthermore, he insisted that “it is not the rule of law to agree with criminals the reform of criminal law, it is not the rule of law to declare that the Attorney General of the State depends on the Government, it is not the rule of law to amnesty embezzlers, nor is it the rule of law, nor is it European to exchange impunity for votes to remain in Government”.
